Intro
Baklava is a rich, flaky, and nutty pastry soaked in sweet honey syrup. This traditional Middle Eastern and Mediterranean dessert is known for its delicate layers of phyllo dough, crunchy nuts, and irresistible sweetness. Perfect for celebrations or as a treat with coffee or tea, baklava is a timeless delight that’s surprisingly simple to make at home!

Ingredients
To make this delicious baklava, you’ll need:
- Phyllo dough
- Unsalted butter (melted)
- Walnuts, pistachios, or almonds (finely chopped)
- Granulated sugar
- Ground cinnamon
- Honey
- Water
- Lemon juice
- Vanilla extract
Using a mix of nuts creates a more complex and rich flavor. Be sure to keep the phyllo dough covered with a damp towel while working to prevent it from drying out.
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter.
In a bowl, mix the chopped nuts, sugar, and cinnamon. Lay a sheet of phyllo dough in the baking dish and brush it with melted butter. Repeat this process for about 8 to 10 layers.
Sprinkle a generous handful of the nut mixture over the layered phyllo. Continue layering phyllo and nuts, brushing each phyllo sheet with butter, until you’ve used all the nuts. Finish with another 8 to 10 layers of phyllo dough on top.
Using a sharp knife, carefully cut the baklava into diamonds or squares. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crisp.
While the baklava bakes, prepare the syrup. In a saucepan, combine honey, water, lemon juice, and vanilla extract. Simmer for 10 minutes, then let it cool slightly.
Once the baklava is out of the oven, immediately pour the warm syrup evenly over the hot pastry. Let it soak in completely before serving.
Tips
For extra crispy baklava, bake at a lower temperature (325°F) for a slightly longer time.
Let the baklava sit for a few hours before serving to allow the flavors to meld together beautifully.
Store at room temperature in an airtight container for up to a week, or refrigerate for longer freshness.
Enjoy this golden, flaky baklava with a cup of tea or coffee for the perfect indulgent treat!
